More Police Officers and Firefighters May Be Committing Suicide Than Dying While in the Line of Duty

A new study from the Ruderman Family Foundation found that in 2017 there were 93 firefighters and 129 police officers killed while on the job.

Meanwhile, there were AT LEAST 103 firefighter suicides and 140 police officer suicides. The study noted that the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance has reported that around 40 percent of firefighter suicides go unreported. So those numbers could actually be much higher. Among the number of contributing factors, the study also highlighted that exposure to traumatic events can lead to different types of mental illnesses. According to the foundation, firefighters and police officers are up to five times more likely than civilians to experience depression. Are you surprised by these numbers?
