Metal Slug | Gaming Throwback
Released by SNK for arcade cabinets back in 1996, this side-scrolling run-and-gun game made a huge impact in malls and bowling alleys. (Where all the cool kids hang out…right?) Fans of Contra were easily swayed by the smooth, hand-drawn art and the added humor of Metal Slug. It’s the year 2028 and the evil General Morden has used his army to overthrow ALL governments. It’s up to you, Captain Marco Rossi and Lieutenant Tarma Roving to rescue P.O.W.s, reclaim or destroy the all-terrain tanks (AKA Metal Slugs), and wipe out any and all of Morden’s forces. The highly responsive controls made the game mechanics feel like butta. Shooting constantly is gonna be your best bet. You can grab special weapons from destroying certain objects, or by freeing P.O.W.s. Grenades are super useful against enemy vehicles, but they’re limited and hard to come by, so use them wisely. You can also get up close and personal to use a melee attack. (You don’t die by running into the enemy. Finally!) I like that there’s always a metal slug on each level to jump into...cause THAT’S when you can really start puking bullets. And the best way to play Metal Slug? With a buddy, of course! If you had to pick one, what would it be: Metal Slug or Contra? And which game should we throwback to next time? Let us know in the comments!
