U.S. Navy Has Changed Qualifications For Surface Warfare Officer (SWO)

In five areas: seamanship, navigation, shiphandling, combat systems and engineering

The changes will focus on increased experience on ships, including additional bridge watchstanding opportunities. Under the new rules, a future Commanding Officer (CO) will face less competition for bridge time, and officers pursuing an SWO qualification must be permanently assigned to a commissioned, or pre-commissioned Navy ship.
